Additional learning support
At Bankstown Hospital School, we ensure every student is ready to learn, even when they are away from their census school, to ensure continuity of learning during their time in hospital. Our school staff works closely with medical and allied health professionals to understand each student’s physical, mental, social, emotional, and learning needs.
Support that fits your child's needs
We develop Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs) and Individualised Learning Summaries (ILS') with our hospital school and the student’s regular (census) school to support ongoing learning, social connection and optimal wellbeing during hospital stays.
Additional learning support can include:
-
teachers working with families, NSW Health staff, and census school staff
-
modifications and learning adjustments to suit each student's medical circumstances
-
adapted programs for high potential and gifted students to continue extending their learning
-
one-to-one or small-group instruction to maintain literacy and numeracy skills
-
ongoing check-ins to review progress and adjust plans as medical needs change
-
extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons
-
facilitating strong social and academic connections for students during hospital stays
-
learning adjustments may include:
- more time
- simpler language
- breaks during tasks
- different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
We know when a student needs help when:
- teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
- reviewing learning progress
- parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
